Tutor: Jilly Greig
Dates: Tuesdays: 9:30 to 4:30pm 28th April, 12th May, 2nd June, and 16th June
Classes will run from the third floor of the Poldrate Granary Building
This basket making class will start with the basics of willow basketry, and build up your skills from session to session. You will learn how to construct a round basket base, stake up, weave an upsett, and learn different weaves and borders. You will find out about how to process your willow, how to manipulate it into the shape you want, and which tools to use for the various tasks. You will also learn about the different styles of basketry in UK and Ireland, and find out about influential basket makers in the country, and their different styles. This is a comprehensive beginners class, and will give you great foundations to move forward in your basket making journey.
Ideally, you will continue to learn after term 1, moving through different makes, until eventually after 2 years of learning in this class, you will be able to move on to the intermediate basket class to learn more advanced techniques and styles.
Willow will be supplied, prepared and soaked ready to work with. For this, you will be required to pay Jilly at the end of each term. Costs will be no more than £50 per person for the term.
Tools will be provided, however, Jilly also sells tools if you would like to build up your kit.
It will be great to meet you!
