Experiment and Create in Watercolour

Drawing and Painting in Watercolour with Sheena Phillips

Friday 10am-12noon.

Sheena is well known in East Lothian and beyond for her water colour paintings.   She exhibits widely in exhibitions and Art Galleries in and around Edinburgh

Sheena’s class will run on a Friday morning from 10am – 12 noon

Materials are not included in the cost of the class. Please bring your own paints, brushes and paper. Advice on materials can be provided by Sheena.

Our aim – Paint what you want to say in your own way

We will be using watercolour but also adding other media; gesso, oil and chalk pastel, inks and anything else you might like throw into the mix. I will also refresh the basic watercolour techniques, tonal values, colour mixing, the tonal values of colour and more.

I will demonstrate and take requests for things that you specifically want to know.

We share ideas for videos, podcast and anything you find interesting.

The aim is to enjoy yourself and in the process practice making a painting that is truly yours.

In the meantime, you can look out photos of a place that you loved but that you felt that the photos wouldn’t make a good painting.

Always remember that we have to be kind to ourselves and try to do what makes us happy. This might sound silly but I am going to try to remember this for myself for the rest of the year.

Brought up in Ayrshire, Sheena gained her Diploma at Edinburgh College of Art. She was craftsman in residence in Linlithgow then worked as a furniture designer until she decided to return to painting with the move to Haddington. She tutors painting at the Poldrate Arts and Crafts Centre where she was past chairman. She also tutors for continuing Education. Her first love is landscape. She likes to prepare sketches and paintings on site. However she is happy to take commissions using photographs when necessary. Most of her work is commissioned, not only landscape but portraits and still life. Her work has been described as ‘atmospheric and evocative’, often showing the effect of light on water and land. She has had work accepted by the Royal Institute of Painters in Watercolour, Royal Scottish Society of Watercolours, Aberdeen Artists Society, The North Ayrshire Arts Council and The Discerning Eye, London. She has been commissioned by councils and many firms and individuals in Britain and abroad. Exhibitions: Broughton Gallery, Dirleton Gallery, Hanover Fine Arts, Peter Potter Gallery, Pitlochry Festival Theatre.
