Spinning 2019

There are three classes being taught this term by Isabella Hodge

Spinning:  Beginners  –   Wednesdays  10 – 12 noon

Spinning Intermediate One  – Wednesdays 7 – 9 pm

Spinning:  Projects and Revision  –  Mondays  7 – 9 pm

These classes are on the first floor in the Mill Building

Isabella is a member of the Haddington Spinners and Weavers Group and has extensive knowledge of spinning and sewing and all things textile.

Spinning:  Beginners  –   Wednesdays  10 – 12 noon

The class will start with learning the basics of spinning using a drop spindle and wool fibre to make a yarn suitable for knitting or weaving. Next the class will move on to using a spinning wheel and learn how to set up the wheel, spin on it and ply to make finished yarns. The course will also cover the use of different fibres and fibre preparation techniques using both fleece and commercial fibres, yarn finishing and how to spin a variety of different yarns.
 Both fleece and commercial fibres will be used on the course, please advise me in advance of any allergies. We will also be handling unwashed fibre on occasion, please advise me if there is any reason (low immune system, pregnancy etc) you cannot do this and substitutes will be provided.
Materials for the course will be provided at a cost of £15 per term (payable to tutor on first night) including all fibres required for classes . Spinning wheels and other necessary equipment will  be available for use during classes. Spinning wheels are also availible to hire for a small fee + deposit.  You are welcome to bring your own wheel to class if you wish but it must be in good working condition, advice on this is available.
The class will run over 20 hours, 10 x 2hrs.

Spinning: Intermediate One  – Improve your Spinning Wednesday 7pm-9pm over 10 weeks.

This class is aimed at people who know the basics of using a spinning wheel and who can already spin a single and ply a yarn. It can be taken as a stand alone class or as a progression from the Spinners: Beginners class.

The class will start with reviewing the basics of creating a skein of 2 ply yarn using short forwards draw.. We will then move on to exploring a wider “toolbox” of spinning and fibre preparation techniques including spinning from the fold, long draw, singles and three-ply yarns, controlling the thickness of your singles and a variety of fibre preperation techniques including combing and using a drum carder.

Spinning:  Projects and Revision  –  Mondays  7 – 9 pm

This class is for students who have some knowledge of spinning and who wish to work on their own projects and explore their own ideas with the help and advice of a tutor and the encouragement and inspiration that comes from working within a group. Topic revision  can be provided to the individual or to the group as desired .

Students should provide their own materials for projects, advice on sourcing these can be given. A small charge may be made for revision materials when provided. Students can either bring their own wheels, use a class one during class time or wheel hire can be arranged. . Other large equipment such as drum carders, English combs etc are available for use during class.

The class will run over 20 hours, 10 x 2hrs.
