Design in Woven Textiles
This class is being run by Kirsty Odds over a series of six weekly online sessions. Kirsty – weaves under the name Hopipola Handwovens from her Aberlady Studio.
Her work is influenced by changing seasons and architectural lines. Her favourite aspect of the craft is the design process and she will share tools and strategies to give students the confidence to explore and experiment with their own weave designs.
This class is aimed at students who have some level of weaving knowledge and are looking to develop their skills in designing for weave.
The course will introduce students to some general design principals and how to develop ideas from inspiration and visual research, looking at areas such as pattern, rhythm and scale to translate into their woven fabric designs.
There will also be a lesson covering colour in design and providing students with ideas of how to develop a colour palette for weave and translating their palette into coloured yarn choices.
We will also explore how one might introduce weave structures into a design as well as the use of suitable yarns to create a desired outcome in the woven fabric.
The course could also introduce students to profile drafting and help them to develop their skillsin designing for block weaves.
